This week on Author Up, we’re joined by poet, fiction writer, and editor Andres Cordoba, and winner of the 2026 Quippy Award for Best Lyricism with his poem “Monica #43.”
Andres is a 2025 Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellow whose work has appeared in Harvard Review, Gandy Dancer, and Epiphany. He earned his MFA in poetry from Brown University and is now pursuing fiction at NYU, while also serving as poetry editor for Big Score Lit.
Andres is a great conversationalist - we talked for over an hour, with most of my prepared questions falling wayside. His views on poetry carry passion, respect, aspiration, and belief. I quickly lost the plot, with most of my prepared questions falling wayside - but I’m glad we wandered where we did.
Our conversation takes us through Andres path into writing, the teachers and communities that helped make that path imaginable, and what it means to grow not only as a writer, but as a reader and editor of other people’s work.
